Coding

The term “Coding” describes the process of turning on and off functions within a car’s Electronic Control Unit (ECU).

Since the mid 1990’s, cars use computers to control functions. Turning your indicators on would set off a sequence of relays, which were located near your dashboard. These relays make a tick-tock sound in time with the lights turning on and off.  Indicator sounds are now computer generated. Most cars now control almost everything through an ECU, from the engine to headlights to windows.

When a car is built, you have to pay extra for some options eg. Apple Car Play or Sports Automatic Gearbox. These options are turned off by default and only turned on when specified on the original order.

Here at Code n Chips, we can access your ECU and turn these options on and off. We do not re-program your ECU or update the software. We just turn options on and off as you need.  A common option to turn OFF is the Auto Start/Stop (AS/S) function. Some functions may require extra hardware, however, we can advise you on this.

None of the options we turn on or off will affect your warranty. We don’t programme additional software or tune your engine/gearbox. Rest assured it is safe to code!

We specialise in the BMW-Mini Group and the VW-Audi Group for coding. If you own one of the following makes, we can help! BMW, Mini, Rolls Royce, Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, ŠKODA, Lamborghini or Bentley.

Please let us know the make, model and year of registration and we can tell you what options can be coded in to your car.

We can also code in new batteries, see BMW Battery Blog. Reset service indicators, reset adaptations, like gearbox learning to your driving style. Review and reset fault codes.
